Recognize this? It’s Washington D.C., overlooked by the far more famous landmarks nearby! As viewed from the Potomac River. As usual, click it.

Clouds!

One of my favorite subjects to photograph is clouds. Recently I had the uncommon opportunity to photograph them on a flight back to Huntsville from Washington DC while sitting in a window seat that was very forward in the plane. This seat position meant that I had no visibility of the plane’s wings at all so it was a great chance to do cloud panoramas!

Click on these photo to see them in much better perspective.

Panoramas of clouds alone can be tricky to make as the clouds shift more that landscapes do, so it is more apt to confuse the software if you don’t capture all images quickly enough.
Vertical panoramas like the one above are a bit trickier still! The raw composition must not deviate very much from left or right so the software (Lightroom Classic here) will know it is vertical.
You also need to strive for the right balance between clouds and earth. Notice the layer of ‘dirt’ and moisture in the air beneath the clouds!
My favorite vertical panorama. I’m tempted to go looking at Google Maps to find this exact location somewhere between Scottsboro AL and Knoxville TN, probably.

My overall favorite from this photoshoot. Click for the best view!
