Scraping the Bottom

Years ago, like 15 or 20 years ago, Aldredge Creek had a more natural creek bed. Then, we had a 50-year rain one night and several houses along the creek were flooded. So the city dredged Aldredge (huh – that almost rhymes!), exposing these scraped-over rocks along the creek bed. Great turtle-tanning beds to boot!

…congregate, seemingly to feed…

And then go back the same way a few minutes later?

Recently Seen Turtles

This one is a bit less common, at least along Aldredge Creek – a musk turtle!
The others are just various sorts of Sliders. Id’ing them would be easier if they would wash up every once in a while!

Cruel Mocker

A Mockingbird in November. These little things can be very territorial in springtime when nesting. I remember one spring when a nest was in the parking lot at work. Five O-Clock Charlie, as he was named, would come along and dive bomb arriving and departing employees from an altitude of about 3 or 4 feet above the ground! Like hot sauce, it was scary at the time, but funny now that it is over.

Three Caves – 1

Less than two miles east of Downtown Huntsville is the Three Caves Preserve. Although the entrances to the caves are usually closed, the Land Trust of North Alabama uses the area outside the actual caves for concerts quite often.
